What is Sub and Predicate
Complete sentences are made up of two parts called the subject and the predicate. The subject tells who or what the sentence is about. What the subject does or is, stated as the predicate.
Examples of Subject and Predicate
- 1. The moon (sub) / is glowing brilliantly (predicate).
- 2. The cows (sub) / were grazing swiftly (predicate).
- 3. The innocent child (sub) / was sleeping calmly (predicate).
- 4. His elder cousin (subject) / served in the police (predicate).

Subject and Predicate are the two vital parts of a sentence. Every day, we read, talk, and write in speaking in sentences. But the complete sentences help us communicate in a way that enables us to understand each other’s thoughts and ideas. So, remember that the subject of the sentence expresses who or what the statement is about. Because, the subject can consist of a noun, a proper noun, or a pronoun as well. And, the predicate tells about what the subject performs or is. Because the predicate commonly begins with a verb.

First, let’s find our subject. Who or what is this sentence about?
Example: 1. Maryam went to the market.
- Subject = Maryam
- Predicate = went to the market.
The subject, Maryam, is = who = the sentence is about. “Went to the market”, is the predicate because it tells what Maryam, the subject, did. It’s important to note that the predicate usually begins with the verb and includes the rest of the sentence.
Example: 2. The cat sat on the mat.
- Subject = The cat
- Predicate = sat on the mat.
Here, the verb is = sat, and performing the verb is the cat. So, the cat is the subject.
Example: 3. The little grey bunny ate the orange carrot.
- Subject = The little grey bunny
- Predicate = ate the orange carrot.
The little grey bunny is my subject. A bunny is a noun. Now, I need to find my predicate. What did the little grey bunny do? Hmm…He ate the orange carrot. Ate the orange carrot is my predicate. =Ate is a verb so my predicate, “ate the orange carrot,” begins with a verb.
Example: 4. Superman flew over the building.
- Subject = Superman
- Predicate = flew over the building.
First, let’s find our subject. Who or what is the sentence about? Hmm… Well, when I read this sentence, I get a picture in my head of Superman. Superman is my subject. Superman is a proper noun. Now I need to find my predicate. What did Superman do?
He flew over the building. “Flew over the building” is my predicate. “Flew” is a verb, so my predicate “flew over the building” begins with a verb.
So now you know a complete sentence has two parts… a subject and a predicate. “You,”. Subject….” did a great job,” predicate!
Compound Subject and Predicate
A Compound Subject is one that has two or more subjects connected by a coordinating conjunction (but, and, or,).
Example:
My brother and sister are coming to see me tonight.
Compound subject is ‘My brother and sister ‘.
A Compound Predicate is one with two or more verbs sometimes connected by a conjunction (and, but, or,). Compound predicates are built around the mutual subject.
Example :
Mark lives in France and speaks French.
Compound Predicate – lives in France and speaks French.
Compound Subject and Compound Predicate: A sentence that has two or more subjects and two or more verbs.
Example 1:
- Bill and Mat went to the theatre and watched movies for hours.
- Compound Subject – Bill and Mat went to the theatre.
- Compound Predicate – and watched movies for hours.
Example 2:
- Maham and Jolly told a story and slept under the shadow of a tree.
- Compound Subject: Maham and Jolly.
- Compound Predicate: told a story and slept under the shadow of a tree.
